The Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) a leading Parastatal in the country had over the years suffered a major loss in revenues due to tiny cargoes landing space.

With a huge promised of overhauling the system for better sustainability and growth, the much talked about ports expansion project remains a dream.

In an interview with an international media outlet, businessman Mr. Papa Yusupha Njie said most of the Gambian businessmen preferred importing their goods to other West African countries rather then Gambia due to the tiny space of our ports and its time-consuming nature.

(( ADVERTISSEMENT))

Oftentimes, the President had a meeting with the business community in a bit to negotiate the unprecedented level of price of goods in the country, in which a breakdown in the supply chain plays a role, especially from the ports. The importers blamed the hike in the price of commodities on the tiny landing space of the ports among other things alleging cargoes spent lot of time in our waters before they can have access to offload which leads to huge demurrage payments.

According to some observers, the inadequate space at the ports is causing a huge potential revenue and jobs lost to the country and can cause long term devastating effects on our economy with modernization of the Senegalese port.

However, for the government, the situation appears to be normal as the Ex-Minister of Trade, Mr. Seedy Keita who is now the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs told the fifth legislature that transit goods from Senegal are bonus to our economy.
A statement ridiculed by many as inappropriate and shameful.
