It is alarming to see public officials lashing out at journalists who ask tough questions. It is the fundamental role of journalists to scrutinise public officials, and this should be welcomed, not condemned. A recent example is MP Lamin Ceesay’s tirade against King FM anchor Ebrima Jarra, where he characterised his line of questioning as unprofessional and hypocritical.

Journalists serve as a voice for the voiceless, conveying the views of all members of our society. They hold our public servants accountable by asking the tough questions that are often on the minds of the general public. The lawmaker’s reaction to the question posed to him only highlights his lack of understanding of his role as an elected official.

It is essential for public servants to understand that they are there to serve the general public and must not see themselves as saints. They must be held accountable for their actions, and journalists play a crucial role in making this happen. It is, therefore, unacceptable for them to lash out at journalists who are doing their job.

In conclusion, we must all stand up for the freedom of the press and the role that journalists play in keeping our public servants accountable. We must advocate for an environment where journalists can ask tough questions without fear of retaliation, and public officials must understand that they are accountable to the people they serve.
