Less than 24 hours after landing from Qatar, Spain parted with Luis Enrique following their World Cup shock defeat at the hands of Morocco on penalties. Spain started the competition with a stylish 7:0 victory over Costa Rica, but that became their only win of the tournament as they suffered a defeat from Japan in the next Group Stage game. A draw against Germany saw them to the Round of 16, but their campaign was cut short after Enrique fail despite his 1,000 penalty plan.

A statement from the country’s football federation reads: “The RFEF would like to thank Luis Enrique and his entire coaching staff at the helm of the absolute national team in recent years.

The sports management of the RFEF has transferred to the president a report in which it is determined that a new project should start for the Spanish Soccer Team, to continue the growth achieved in recent years thanks to the work carried out by Enrique and their collaborators.

Both the president, Luis Rubiales, and the sports director, Jose Francisco, have transmitted the decision to the coach.”

Enrique led Spain to the semi-finals of the 2020 European Championship and the 2021 UEFA Nations League finals. Since his appointment in 2018, out of 44 games played, Spain has won 24 drew on 11 occasions, and lost 9. However, he has not done his penalty homework right, costing the nation a shocking exit.
