It was an unpleasant weekend for most families due to heavy downpour which resulted to flooding in the Capital, Banjul and lots of metropolitan towns in the Kanifing municipality.

The flood occurred as a result of 48hrs continuous heavy rains with loud thunder and lightning sparks.

This natural disaster left lots of families homeless in the Greater Banjul Area and preliminary situation reports suggest two lives were lost as a result of the rain in the Central River Region.

As for residents of Tabacco road in the Banjul North Constituency; more than 50 households were affected including women and children.

According Mr Amadou Krubally, the flooding was attributed to poor the drainage system saying; when the famous Banjul rehabilitation project was awarded, he thought the contractor was going to start with the drainage system instead of the roads.

“They started with roads instead of the water ways and our drainage machine isn’t functional since last year” Mr Krubally said.

Asked whether the machine was repaired as promised; Mr Krubally said they were promised the affected part was already procured and was on its way rob the country to be fixed.

It can be recalled, last year similar incidents happened in Banjul and promises were made to the affected victims which included the maintenance of the machine for effective service delivery.

However, for Mr Krubally, the situation of the machine remains the same and the President will be going there today for another inspection and situational assessment as the same condition persists despite his earlier visits.

In the meantime, dozens of families are currently lodged at the St Joseph’s high school.

Elsewhere in the Kanifing Municipality; residents of Bakoteh, Nema Kunku and Brikama are making similar complaints as most of them lost their clothing, food and other household goods.

Earlier, the Vice President made a courtesy call on the victims with the Mayor of the area to show solidarity to victims.
