Former outspoken StateHouse Imam, Abdoulie Fatty has expressed willingness to go into a debate with anti-FGM Islam cleric, Imam Baba Leigh who consistently defined the act as a rooted culture, not Islam.

In his recent intervention, Imam Leigh argued he is not a stranger in Islam and that the practice of FGM is rooted in culture, not Islam.

Having been against FGM over the years with activists on the same platform advocating for the same purpose, Imam Abdoulie Fatty and Co. remained adamant that the act is religious and should be practiced to purify women and maintain the belief from generation to generation.

Imam Leigh’s recent reaction to the practice triggered a debate in the public space with an organization taking it upon itself to organize a debate between the two imams.

According to the organizers, Imam Fatty has accepted their invitation to go into a debate with Imam Leigh on the topic: ‘FGM is Islam not rooted culture’.

However, they stated that they are awaiting confirmation from Baba Leigh for a possible dialogue on the topic to create public awareness.

The NAM for Foni Kansala will table a bill at the Assembly in the coming parliamentary session seeking to amend the act on the pretext that the ban on the practice contradicts religious and cultural beliefs.
